Viridian ThermoTech™

Maximum energy savings, superior interior comfort

With greater emphasis being placed on how to save energy in both residential and commercial buildings and with the introduction of energy regulations, glass plays an increasingly important role. The selection of increased thermal insulation or glass with a lower U Value, combined with solar control, is an important and critical decision in the building envelope’s overall performance.

Viridian ThermoTech™ is a range of sealed insulating glass units that offer improved insulation. For example: by incorporating Viridian EnergyTech™ a Low-Emissivity (Low E) glass for greater thermal insulation, ThermoTech decreases heat conduction between outside and inside; or by selecting solar control glass with reflective or Low-Emissivity coatings (eg Viridian EVantage™), ThermoTech can optimise energy management with natural light transmission.

ThermoTech improves comfort for the building occupants in hot and cold areas adjacent to windows and so reduces heating and cooling costs.

By reducing the air-to-air heat transfer, ThermoTech provides a more stable and controllable internal environment and is suitable for all climates.

Description

ThermoTech insulating glass units. There are two spacer options within this range.

  • Metal Spacer – Two or more pieces of glass are separated by a metal spacer and sealed to provide a hermetically sealed airspace. It has a primary water vapour proof seal and the secondary seal is supplied standard as polysulphide. Structural silicone secondary seal is an option upon request. The airspace is provided with a desiccant to prevent condensation forming within the unit.
  • Thermoplastic Spacer TPS® – TPS® is a butylbased thermoplastic material.

It is UV stable with integrated desiccant and applied directly onto the glass by a computercontrolled nozzle.

This non-metallic spacer offers the ultimate heat insulation. In itself, it is an effective gas and moisture barrier. Units are supplied with polysulphide secondary seal as standard. The space is filled with argon gas as standard which further enhances the performance of the unit. Combine it with a silicone secondary seal and it is perfectly suited for structural glazing. Strucutrual silicone is available as an option upon request.

Special applications

  • Structural or silicone glazing ThermoTech is designed for fully framed conditions and uses a polysulphide secondary seal as standard. When used in structural silicone glazing systems, the secondary seal must be ordered as silicone.
  • Swimming pools ThermoTech can be installed in pool enclosures and other buildings where high humidity is anticipated. However care must be taken to ensure the condensate moisture in the glazing system does not collect. This could break down the unit seals due to chemical contamination etc. Please consult with Viridian™ prior to using ThermoTech in this application.
  • Roof glazing ThermoTech units should be specified with a silicone seal. Utilising the metal spacer, the bottom edge should be stepped 50mm to 100mm. Utilising the TPS® spacer does not require a stepped unit, although in both combinations it is vital all edges of the IGU are properly supported. We recommend a slope of 20º. With overhead glazing, the requirements of the glazing code must be considered. Viridian recommends both the inner and outer panels be a Grade A safety glass.
  • Sound reduction ThermoTech can be designed to offer sound reduction (refer to page 66). This is achieved by a combination of different glass thicknesses, use of laminated glass and maximising the spacer thickness up to 20mm.
